The tomb where the cheese was found belonged to Ptahmes, a high-ranking official during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II. Ptahmes served as the mayor of Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, and oversaw the construction of the Pharaoh’s tomb.
The discovery of the ancient cheese adds to the growing body of evidence that suggests the ancient Egyptians had a rich culinary culture.
