The latest NBC News national poll shows that two in three voters believe the country is on the wrong track, with only 28% saying it’s on the right track. This is seen as a warning sign for Democrats, especially given that the cost of living remains a dominant issue and 66% of voters say their family’s income is falling behind. Views on the country’s direction are divided along party lines, with 92% of Republicans, 36% of Democrats, and 70% of independents believing the country is on the wrong track.
The pessimism about the country’s direction has led to relatively low levels of enthusiasm about the upcoming election, with 65% of voters marking themselves as very interested, a drop from the same point in the 2020 election. This pessimism has historically spelled trouble for the party in power, with an average of 66% of voters saying the country was on the wrong track in elections where the incumbent president’s party lost the White House.
Despite this, Vice President Kamala Harris has an advantage over former President Donald Trump when it comes to representing change, with 47% saying Harris is better able to bring change compared to 38% for Trump. The national poll was conducted in September and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
