UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka recently quit the undefeated football team, citing unfulfilled commitments that were promised to him upon enrolling at the university. While college athletes are not paid directly by universities, the NCAA allowed players to profit from their name, likeness, and image in 2021. Sluka, who transferred to UNLV after successful seasons at Holy Cross, still has a fifth year of eligibility due to the Covid-19 pandemic. By leaving UNLV before his fourth game, he can preserve that eligibility and potentially play elsewhere in 2025. It was reported that Sluka was promised a $100,000 NIL payment that was never received. His departure comes at a challenging time for UNLV, as they had won three games to start the season and are facing conference affiliation changes. The Mountain West Conference, where UNLV currently plays, will soon lose several schools to the Pac-12. Despite the timing of his departure, Sluka wishes his teammates the best of luck for the rest of the season. UNLV will face Fresno State in their upcoming game on Saturday.
