Sen. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat from Georgia, criticized GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, calling him “white supremacy in blackface” and stating that he is the opposite of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. represented. Warnock referenced Robinson’s past comments, including expressing support for slavery, calling himself a “black NAZI,” and making derogatory remarks about Martin Luther King Jr. Warnock, who is the current pastor at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where King once served, emphasized the disturbing nature of Robinson’s words.
Warnock also tied Robinson to former President Donald Trump, accusing Trump of backing Robinson for similar reasons he supported Herschel Walker in 2022, claiming Trump is endorsing unfit and unqualified Black candidates in a cynical attempt to confuse voters. Despite facing pressure to drop his endorsement, Trump has praised Robinson multiple times, including calling him “Martin Luther King on steroids” at a rally.
Robinson has denied the CNN report that brought his past comments to light and Trump has not addressed the controversy, but there are no plans to retract his endorsement of Robinson. The situation highlights the tension between the two political parties and the issue of integrity and qualifications in political candidates.
