Ravichandran Ashwin was the star of the show as India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the opening Test match in Chennai. Ashwin took 10 wickets in the match and was named player of the match for his all-round performance, which included a century in the first innings. Bangladesh, chasing a daunting target of 515, were bowled out for 234 in their second innings, with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scoring with 82.
Ashwin’s spin-bowling partner Ravindra Jadeja also had a good game, taking three wickets on the final day. India declared their second innings at 287-4 on day three after centuries from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. The win gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
The Test match marked the return of Pant, who had been injured in a car crash, and also saw Virat Kohli back in action after the birth of his second child. India’s bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, played a crucial role in bundling out Bangladesh for 149 in their first innings.
Following their victory in Chennai, both teams will now head to Kanpur for the second Test match. India will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the World Test Championship rankings during the new Test season. Bangladesh, who were coming off a historic series win in Pakistan, have never beaten India in Tests.
