UN warns of potential catastrophic conflict as violence between Israel and Hezbollah escalates | Latest updates on Israel-Palestine conflict

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has informed the Security Council that Israel’s recent attacks on Hezbollah’s communication devices violate international law and may be considered a war crime. The UN political affairs chief, Rosemary DiCarlo, warned that further violence between Israel and Iran-aligned groups Hamas and Hezbollah could escalate into a much more devastating conflict. Over the past few days, Israel conducted air raids in Lebanon, resulting in casualties and heightened tensions in the region.

Hezbollah, a prominent Lebanese movement, has not confirmed the deaths of their commanders in the recent attacks. The United States, through Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood, called for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and prevent actions that could lead to a catastrophic war in the region. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from homes near the Israel-Lebanon border due to the escalating violence.

Turk emphasized the need for an independent investigation into the attacks on Hezbollah’s devices and called for those responsible to be held accountable. He expressed concern about the impact of the attacks on the people of Lebanon, who are already facing challenges from an economic crisis and ongoing tensions in the region. The UN is urging diplomacy and peaceful resolutions to the conflict to prevent further suffering and devastation in the area.
