A California firefighter, Robert Hernandez, was arrested on suspicion of arson for allegedly setting five fires in wine country between August and September while off-duty. The fires burned less than one acre of wildland and were quickly extinguished. Cal Fire’s director, Joe Tyler, expressed shock at the violation of public trust and vowed to uphold the department’s reputation. Hernandez faces five counts of arson to forest land and is being held on $2 million bail. The region where the fires were set has a history of devastating wildfires, including the Tubbs Fire in 2017 and the Glass Fire in 2020. California experienced a record-breaking 4 million acres burned in 2020 and nearly 1 million acres burned so far in 2021. Recent fires in Southern California prompted evacuations and threatened tens of thousands of homes in San Bernardino County. It is unclear if Hernandez has legal representation at this time.
