American soldier who entered North Korea sentenced to time served

Travis King, the U.S. soldier who ran across the Demilitarized Zone into North Korea, has been sentenced to time already served in prison for charges of desertion, assault, and disobeying orders. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was dishonorably discharged. King spent 63 days in North Korea in addition to serving time in the U.S. Following a diplomatic effort, he was returned to the U.S. in September. Defense attorneys argued that King faced issues adjusting and racism in his unit as a Black soldier. The incident occurred 50 years after James Dresnok defected to North Korea to avoid a court-martial. Dresnok, who died in North Korea in 2016, was also a U.S. soldier who defected to North Korea. King’s case is seen as promoting good order and discipline within the army by deterring similar offenses in the future. Despite facing challenges during his military service, King is now free and will return home with credit for good behavior.
