Poland commemorated the 85th anniversary of the German Nazi invasion on Sunday, marking the start of World War II. Throughout the five years of brutal German occupation during WWII, Poland lost 6 million citizens, a sixth of its population, with 3 million being Jewish. Solemn ceremonies were held in Wielun, the first civilian target of German bombing in Europe, and at a monument on the Westerplatte peninsula. Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk called for Germany to make amends and emphasized the importance of unity and defense against aggression in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Duda highlighted the unresolved issue of compensation for the damage caused during WWII, stressing that forgiveness and admission of guilt are different from compensation. Poland’s previous demand for $1.3 trillion in damages from Germany has been toned down by the current cabinet in the hopes of strengthening ties between the two countries. Despite Germany’s insistence that the matter is closed due to past payments to the East Bloc, Poland maintains that it did not receive its fair share of compensation.
Tusk reiterated the importance of never exposing Poland to such risks again, emphasizing the need for a strong and united NATO defense alliance in the face of modern threats. He also highlighted Poland’s efforts to build a modern army and contribute to the defense of Europe. The ceremonies served as a reminder of the devastating impact of WWII on Poland and the ongoing need for reconciliation and remembrance.
