A tropical storm warning was issued for Hawaii’s Big Island as Tropical Storm Hone approached with 50 mph winds, expected to pass near or south of the island Saturday night into early Sunday. The National Hurricane Center also warned of life-threatening surf and rip currents across the island chain on Saturday. Hawaii’s Big Island could see around 10 inches of rain, with Hone located around 425 miles east-southeast of Hilo and moving west at 16 mph. A “red flag” warning was issued for leeward areas of all islands due to high winds increasing the risk of wildfires. Meanwhile, Hurricane Gilma is east of Hone but forecast to become a tropical depression before reaching the Hawaiian Islands. No coastal watches or warnings are in place for Gilma.
