Independent designer Kelin Carolyn Zhang was inspired by Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen’s love for the chocolate muffins served in the Olympic Village. She embarked on a viral quest to bring these muffins to New York City for a pop-up event with the help of New York City cafe Isshiki Matcha. Despite facing obstacles such as reaching out to the French supplier, navigating customs and FDA approval, and dealing with delivery challenges, Zhang and Isshiki Matcha successfully brought the viral muffins to hundreds of New Yorkers. The event drew a large crowd, with people lining up early in the morning to purchase the muffins. While some have criticized the hype over a simple muffin, Zhang sees it as lighthearted fun that allowed fans to feel included in the Olympic experience. She described the muffins as light, moist, and not too sweet, and hopes to try more in the future. Zhang and Isshiki Matcha are working on importing another batch of muffins for sale, emphasizing the importance of having fun and being a little silly in life. The experience of bringing the viral muffins to New York City has been the most cherished aspect for Zhang, highlighting the joy of trying new things and embracing unique opportunities.
