Viewing Egypt’s Royal Marriages Through Time: A Historical Perspective

Egypt Through the Lens is a fascinating four-part series showcasing the modern history of Egypt through the lens of photography. The third episode focuses on the glamour and excess of Egyptian royal weddings, featuring events such as King Farouk’s extravagant three-day wedding to Queen Farida in 1938. The wedding was attended by 4,000 guests, including foreign royalty and world leaders, and featured a lavish display of expensive jewellery and designer clothes. However, the king’s lifestyle was also captured in candid paparazzi pictures showing him holidaying with young women in Italy, shedding light on a different side to his public image.

King Farouk later went through a divorce and remarried a woman he spotted in a jewellery shop in Cairo. The six-week ceremony for his second wedding was even more elaborate and lavish than his first, showcasing the excess and opulence of the Egyptian royal family during this bygone era.

Through these photographs, viewers are given a glimpse into the world of Egyptian royalty, with a focus on the politics, world leaders, conflicts, and cinema that shaped the country’s history over the past 150 years. The series celebrates the art of photography and its ability to capture the essence of a time and place, providing a unique and insightful perspective on the rich cultural heritage of Egypt.
