Maggie Steffens, the U.S. water polo captain, is competing in the Paris Olympics with a heavy heart after her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner, passed away unexpectedly just days before the Games. Despite the tragedy, Steffens scored two goals in the U.S.’s victory over Greece on Saturday. She described Lulu as the “light of the world” and is determined to honor her memory by embodying her spirit during the Games.
Steffens, who is the highest scoring woman in Olympic history, is married to Bobby Conner, Lulu’s brother. Lulu was an artist and a UC Davis grad. Reflecting on her loss, Steffens acknowledged the support of her team and her husband’s family during this difficult time. She dropped a bouquet of flowers into the Seine River during the opening ceremony as a tribute to Lulu.
The sudden death of Lulu before the Olympics brought back memories of coach Adam Krikorian’s loss of his brother before the 2016 Games. Krikorian emphasized the importance of showing Steffens love and support during this challenging period. He stressed the need for her to spend time with her family and grieve, while also allowing her the freedom to compete in the Games. Steffens hopes to make Lulu proud with her performance in Tokyo, dedicating her games to her sister-in-law’s memory.
