The proposed $40 million soccer stadium in South Reno, aiming to attract two professional soccer teams to Northern Nevada, faced a setback when the Washoe County Open Space & Regional Parks Commission voted against recommending the project to the Board of County Commission. The parks commission received overwhelming opposition with 275 letters against the project and only two in favor. The For Our Fans Foundation (FOFF) proposed a privately-funded 6,500-seat stadium to be built on a piece of land at South Valleys Regional Park already designated in the master plan. The stadium would potentially host a USL League One men’s team and a Super League USL women’s team. However, concerns about noise, traffic, lights, and the impact on the existing South Valleys Regional Park master plan were raised during the meeting. The potential stadium location is near the Reno Ice facility with limited parking in the area. The original master plan for South Valleys Regional Park included soccer fields, but the current conceptual master plan released in 2015 outlined a variety of amenities such as baseball/softball fields, a pool, a splash pad, batting cages, and more. The unused land at the park covers 44.1 acres, with the 32.7-acre parcel being considered for the soccer stadium. The Washoe County Commission will make a final decision on the project on Aug. 20, following the parks commission’s recommendation against it.
