The 2023-24 high school athletics season came to a thrilling close last weekend, with local teams making their mark across various sports. The Carson girls and Spanish Springs boys claimed state cross country titles, while Bishop Manogue and Truckee secured football championships in their respective divisions. Eureka achieved a rare football-basketball sweep in the 1A class, and Lowry’s Savannah Stoker led her team to a third consecutive basketball state championship before setting a Nevada softball home run record.
In basketball, Bishop Manogue’s girls team won the 4A state title, marking their first championship since 2003. The season ended on a controversial note as coach Sara Schopper-Ramirez was fired despite the team’s exceptional performance.
Moving on to spring sports, Reno baseball clinched another regional title under coach Pete Savage, narrowly missing out on a state championship. Douglas softball continued its regional dominance but fell short at the state level.
On the track, standout athletes like Bishop Manogue’s Amaya Aramini and Reno’s Eric Ortega-Gammill claimed state titles in various events, showcasing their talent and dedication to their sport. Sprinter JT Thompson also made an impressive comeback from injury to win state in the 100-meter dash by a slim margin.
Nevada Sports Net will air a High School Year in Review show on June 14, featuring interviews with the male and female high school athletes of the year. Fans can catch a condensed recap of the exciting season on NSN.
