Resurgence of the alphorn fuels growth in cottage industry

Brandi and Lindsey Jones, owners of Silver & Brass Music Co., are bringing the almost lost tradition of the alphorn to Carson City, crafting these unique instruments in North America. The couple, who are also musicians and teachers, have created 78 alphorns to date, making them the sole builders of these horns in North America. Their love for wind instruments led them to start a business in downtown Carson City specializing in brass instrument restoration, which has now evolved to focus on crafting alphorns.

With a price tag of around $3,000, custom alphorns from Silver & Brass Music Co. are made using antique parts from early French horns, with options for different types of wood and customizations. Brandi and Lindsey are also passing on their knowledge and love for the alphorn by teaching others how to play, with loaner and rental options available for beginners. They are currently in Switzerland to compete in the Swiss International Alphorn Festival, where they will be among over 100 players showcasing their skills.

The Jones’ hope to attract more individuals who want to learn to play the alphorn, emphasizing that no previous musical experience is necessary. Their unique sound echoes off the mountains, providing a distinctive touch to the region. To learn more about the Sierra Alphorn players and Silver & Brass Music Co., visit their website or podcast. With their dedication to preserving and promoting the alphorn tradition in North America, Brandi and Lindsey Jones are making a mark in the world of music.
