The Nevada state prosecutor is seeking the state Supreme Court’s approval for the indictment of six Republicans accused of submitting a false certificate to Congress declaring Donald Trump the winner of the state’s 2020 presidential election. The case is part of a broader effort across seven battleground states to keep Trump in office following his loss to Joe Biden. Criminal cases have also been initiated in Michigan, Georgia, and Arizona.
A district court judge ruled that Las Vegas was not the appropriate venue for the case, leading to the charges being dismissed. The Attorney General’s office has appealed this decision, asserting confidence in the case and a commitment to holding the defendants accountable for their actions.
The defendants, including GOP officials and members, were indicted just before the statute of limitations expired. They face charges of offering a false instrument for filing and uttering a forged instrument, which could result in prison time.
Defense lawyers believe the judge ruled correctly and are confident that the motion to dismiss will be upheld. They argue that the case should have been brought in a northern Nevada city where the alleged crimes occurred.
The Nevada Supreme Court has not yet scheduled oral arguments, and it remains to be seen how the case will proceed. Trump lost to Biden in Nevada by over 30,000 votes, and investigations have found no credible evidence of widespread voter fraud in the state.
