Holidaymakers in Germany, Croatia, and Slovenia are facing massive traffic jams as they set off for their summer vacations following the end of the school year. The German Algemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) has warned of particularly bad congestion this weekend, especially in Bavaria where many tourists are heading to Italy and Austria. Traffic expert Alexander Kreip expects a significant number of families to be on the roads on Saturday and Sunday.
In Slovenia, the peak of the summer season has led to longer queues on the roads, prompting the country’s traffic safety agency AVP to remind drivers to take breaks and stay hydrated during their journeys. Traffic jams are expected on the western Ljubljana highway ring and on the Primorska motorway.
Croatia is also experiencing heavy traffic with a high number of travelers and some traffic accidents causing congestion. A traffic accident near Zadar resulted in a 9km long queue, while the Split ferry port is facing congestion as well. The ferry company Jadrolinija has reported record traffic statistics with 16,000 vehicles and 80,000 passengers passing through.
In response to the influx of tourists, the Croatian Tourist Board is distributing bottles of water and car air fresheners at major toll plazas and ferry ports as a gesture of welcome. As holidaymakers continue to flock to popular destinations in these countries, traffic congestion is expected to remain a challenge throughout the summer season.
