A tractor-trailer carrying lithium-ion batteries overturned and caught fire on Interstate 15 between California and Las Vegas, causing a major highway closure for 48 hours. The California Highway Patrol announced the reopening of all lanes after crews worked to move the hazardous materials a safe distance away. The presence of lithium-ion batteries made it impossible to extinguish the fire with water, so it had to burn out on its own. Efforts to remove the hazardous materials container were hindered by its weight, causing significant delays for travelers.
Barbara Gray and Charles Gallagher, two drivers caught in the resulting traffic gridlock, described the situation as frustrating and scary. Gray mentioned that people were stranded without assistance, forced to use the bathroom on the side of the road in the extreme heat. Gallagher’s four-hour drive home to Las Vegas turned into an 11-hour ordeal, rerouting to Interstate 40 due to the closure on Interstate 15.
Fire officials distributed water to stranded drivers in the scorching temperatures, and efforts were made to assess air quality and potential health risks due to hazardous materials and chemicals involved in the accident. Despite the long delays and challenges faced by travelers, emergency response teams managed to contain the situation and reopen the highway for safe travel.
