Winners and People’s Choice for Dark Skies Photography Contest Announced by Nevada County Arts Council

The Nevada County Arts Council, along with community partners, will be announcing the winners of the “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” photo contest at an opening reception on July 31st. The competition received 74 submissions and aimed to promote the Dark Skies movement by encouraging residents to limit light pollution and appreciate the beauty of the night sky.

Heather Heckler, GVNC Cultural District Program Manager, expressed appreciation for the diverse submissions that showcase Nevada County’s natural and cultural landmarks. The winning photographs in three categories—professional, emerging/amateur, and youth—will be unveiled at the free event, along with a People’s Choice award.

The opening reception will feature presentations, awards, and a slideshow of all submitted photos. According to Eliza Tudor, Executive Director of Nevada County Arts Council, photography has the power to inspire people to connect with and preserve the night sky. The exhibit will be on display until September 18th, 2024, for those unable to attend the reception.

The contest is part of a larger initiative led by the Cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City and the County of Nevada to protect the region’s night skies. The event aims to raise awareness about the increasing light pollution and encourage individuals to appreciate the hidden beauty of the night through photography. Attendees are invited to celebrate the talented photographers and learn more about the importance of preserving our dark skies.
