Nevada election officials have confirmed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign has gathered enough signatures to appear on the Nevada ballot this fall. This development marks a significant step forward for Kennedy’s independent bid to challenge the dominance of the Republican and Democratic parties in U.S. elections.
Kennedy, who has garnered support due to his famous name and loyal base, poses a potential threat to both major parties. His exclusion from the CNN debate in June was a setback, but he held a separate event to address questions posed to President Biden and former President Trump.
However, legal challenges may still arise. State and national Democrats have filed a lawsuit challenging Kennedy’s candidacy due to his affiliation with political parties in other states. Kennedy’s campaign had to hurriedly gather new signatures after clarification from the Nevada Secretary of State’s office that his original petition was incomplete.
The Secretary of State’s office had initially required independent candidates to name their running mate when gathering signatures, a requirement that Kennedy’s campaign had challenged in court. Despite this, state and county election officials verified over 22,000 signatures on the new petition, surpassing the requirement of just over 10,000.
Kennedy’s presence on the Nevada ballot raises the stakes in the upcoming election, as he strives to make a meaningful impact as an independent candidate. His campaign’s resilience in overcoming legal hurdles highlights the potential impact of his bid for the presidency.
