Athletes from around the world have begun competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics, with key events including handball, rowing, shooting, and volleyball kicking off at 8am BST. New Zealand’s Thomas Mackintosh won the first heat in the men’s single sculls, while Spain’s men were tied with Slovenia in handball and Germany was leading against Japan in men’s volleyball. Badminton also started, with the Porte de la Chapelle Arena hosting early matches. The first medals of the Games are expected to be awarded in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event.

Meanwhile, Australia’s swimming team, known as the Dolphins, is expected to perform well in the pool despite the depth of the pool being shallower than standard. The starting platforms have fins to help swimmers push off, potentially leading to new world records. Australian basketball fans have a second team to cheer on with South Sudan also competing in the Games. South Sudan’s team includes players from the National Basketball League and NBA, among other leagues worldwide.

The Paris 2024 Olympics have also seen the Refugee Olympic Team grow to 37 athletes from various countries, competing in 12 sports. Dorsa Yavarivafa, representing the Refugee Olympic Team in badminton, relocated to the UK due to safety concerns and was selected for the team through a scholarship program. As the Games continue, fans can expect to see more exciting events and competitions.
