The Grand Sierra Resort has released new details of its proposed arena, which will be a part of a $1 billion investment into the hotel/casino. The arena will be home to the Nevada men’s basketball team and potentially an AHL hockey team owned by GSR’s Alex Meruelo. The facility will have a seating capacity of over 10,000 and will host concerts and special events in addition to sporting events.
The updated plans show a new on-property location for the arena, a satellite ice rink, a parking garage, a fan zone, and various internal design elements. The state-of-the-art facility will feature luxury suites, premium hospitality clubs, and advanced technological integrations to enhance the fan experience.
GSR general manager Shannon Keel expressed excitement about positively impacting the region’s sports and entertainment landscape. The arena will create unmatched value for Reno, fostering community engagement and offering unique experiences for visitors year-round.
The arena was originally planned for the southwest edge of the property but was moved to the northwest edge based on recent soil samples. Plans also include a multi-level golf hitting bay at the current Grand Bay location. The project was originally scheduled for a 2026-27 opening, but no specific timeline was outlined in the recent announcement.
The partnership between GSR and the Meruelo Group, along with architect Gensler, aims to bring a world-class sports and entertainment arena to Reno, enhancing the city’s vibrant entertainment lifestyle.
