Two Nevada baseball players, Jason Doktorczyk and JR Freethy, ink deals with MLB clubs

Nevada baseball players Jason Doktorczyk and JR Freethy have officially signed contracts with major-league teams, ending their college eligibility. Doktorczyk, a right-handed pitcher, was a ninth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins and received a $187,000 bonus. Meanwhile, Freethy, an outfielder, was a 13th-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays and received a $150,000 bonus. Both players had the option to return for their senior seasons but chose to pursue their professional careers after being selected in this year’s draft.

Doktorczyk had an impressive junior season with a 3.95 ERA and 91 strikeouts over 84.1 innings, earning him first-team All-Mountain West honors. On the other hand, Freethy hit .303 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs, showcasing his power at the plate. Freethy had previously committed to play for Georgia in 2025 but has now decided to join the pro ranks.

In addition to Doktorczyk and Freethy, three other local players from Northern Nevada were also drafted, including Reno High alum Gunner Gouldsmith and former Nevada players Cam Walty and Ryan Jackson. All three were seniors last year and were expected to receive minimal signing bonuses before embarking on their professional baseball careers. The success of these Nevada players in the MLB draft highlights the talent coming out of the region and the strong baseball program at the university.
