No refunds available for canceled Sierra Nevada World Music Festival

The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, a beloved reggae event that had been a mainstay for three decades, was set to return in 2023 after a five-year hiatus. However, just days before the event was scheduled to start, organizers announced its cancellation due to financial challenges. Attendees, including Scott Romer and Kirstin Pugh, were left unable to recoup their money for tickets, despite having spent over $1,000 each to attend the festival.

Organizers cited low ticket sales as the reason they were unable to refund attendees, with income from ticket sales being used for nonrefundable costs such as artist advances, operational deposits, insurance, and advertising fees. The cancellation notice stated that the festival did not have sufficient funds to reimburse ticket buyers.

While efforts were made to salvage the festival, including seeking last-minute co-sponsors or partners, the decision was ultimately made to cancel the event. Attendees like Romer and Pugh were left disappointed and frustrated, with no money for refunds being offered.

In an attempt to appease ticket holders, event organizers offered to honor tickets at Reggae on the River, another reggae festival in Humboldt County in August, with an additional fee per day. However, this offer did little to satisfy attendees who had been looking forward to the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival for months.

Despite the efforts of organizers to save the festival, the financial challenges ultimately led to its cancellation, leaving attendees like Romer and Pugh out of luck. The disappointment and discontent of festival-goers reflect the challenges faced by event organizers in the music industry.
