The son of “El Chapo” Guzmán and Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael Zambada García were arrested in El Paso, Texas, facing multiple charges related to the cartel’s fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking networks. This arrest is part of the U.S. efforts to hold cartel leaders accountable for the drug crisis, particularly involving fentanyl.
Other sons of “El Chapo” have also been indicted and arrested in connection with drug distribution into the U.S. The Sinaloa Cartel, along with the Jalisco cartel, plays a significant role in the synthetic drug crisis in the country, with fentanyl being the deadliest drug threat the U.S. has faced.
The “Chapitos,” the four sons of “El Chapo,” took over their father’s drug trafficking networks and promoted fentanyl as a significant part of the cartel’s business. Zambada García, also known as “El Mayo,” was a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel and a co-head of the criminal organization for three decades. He has recently been involved in an internal battle with the “Chapitos.”
The DEA has found that both the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels are actively involved in producing and trafficking fentanyl into the U.S., despite public announcements by the “Chapitos” to stop fentanyl trafficking. This continued flow of fentanyl from Mexico into the U.S. has contributed to the high number of drug overdose deaths in the country, with fentanyl being the primary cause.
