Israel’s recent escalation of declaring most of Gaza as unsafe for Palestinian civilians has caused widespread displacement and destruction in the enclave. As of Monday, 83 percent of the Gaza Strip has been marked as a “no-go zone” or issued evacuation orders, leaving residents with few safe places to seek refuge.
The Israeli military recently issued an evacuation order for the eastern part of Khan Younis, claiming Hamas presence in the area. Less than an hour after the order, airstrikes killed at least 70 people in the region. The shrinking safe zones in Gaza have forced nearly 150,000 residents out of their homes, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The World Health Organization has criticized Israel’s designation of safe zones, warning of increased health risks due to overcrowding and limited infrastructure. With up to 1.9 million internally displaced people in Gaza, residents are being moved “like pawns in a board game”, facing continuous attacks on schools, hospitals, and refugee camps by the Israeli military.
The relentless targeting of civilian areas in Gaza has left residents with no safe spaces, with recent attacks on UN schools and refugee camps resulting in numerous civilian casualties. The ongoing violence and displacement in Gaza underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict to ensure the safety and well-being of the Palestinian people.
