Prominent publisher Jimmy Lai is testifying in his defense in a national security trial under Beijing’s imposed law in Hong Kong. Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was arrested in 2020 during a crackdown on pro-democracy protests. He faces charges of colluding with foreign forces and putting out seditious publications. His lawyer argued that prosecutors’ evidence was insufficient, but the judges ruled that Lai has a case to answer.
Lai will testify in his defense as the case continues. The trial is seen as a test of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong, which has seen its civil liberties diminish since the enactment of the national security law in 2020. Prosecutors allege Lai sought foreign support against Beijing under the guise of fighting for freedom and democracy.
Six former Apple Daily executives have pleaded guilty to collusion charges and admitted to conspiring with Lai to call for sanctions against Hong Kong and China. They await sentencing behind bars. The trial has seen former executives testify as witnesses for the prosecution.
Hong Kong, once known for its media freedom, now ranks 135th out of 180 countries in Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index. Observers see Lai’s trial as a critical moment for press freedom and civil liberties in Hong Kong, as authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong assert that the national security law has brought stability to the city.
