U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley shared a video showing the aftermath of the killing of Thomas Crooks, the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump in July. Crooks was shot and killed after opening fire at a rally, injuring several people. Grassley demanded answers about security failures that allowed the shooting to occur. The video showed law enforcement agents on a rooftop alongside Crooks’ body, with blood visible at the scene.
The video obtained from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit shows officers armed with rifles and wearing body armor discussing the events surrounding the shooting. It was unclear whether the rifle found on the roof belonged to Crooks. The Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General has opened three reviews into the incident, and U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned, taking responsibility for the security lapse.
Crooks had been identified as suspicious before the shooting, but was not designated as a threat until moments before he opened fire. Trump, who is now the official Republican nominee for president, reportedly plans to no longer hold outdoor rallies following the attempt on his life. Instead, events will be held indoors. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have called for accountability and transparency in investigating the security failures that allowed the assassination attempt to occur. Crooks’ motive for the attack remains unknown.
