Council Meeting Focuses on Community Development Block Grant Projects and Homeownership

The Fallon City Council recently discussed Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) projects and heard from the Nevada Rural Housing authority during a meeting on July 16. City Engineer Derek Zimney presented on the recent completion of the Court Street reconstruction project, which utilized $405,045 in CDBG funds. The project involved full roadway reconstruction and the installation of curb, gutter, and sidewalk. Another $172,000 was awarded for the design of a portion of Kaiser Street. Two more public hearings related to CDBG applications will be held in September and February 2025. The council also approved a resolution transferring the city’s 2024 Private Activity Bond Volume Cap to the NRH to fund affordable housing for low and moderate-income individuals in the area.

NRH director of community development, Beth Dunning, expressed gratitude for the council’s support of NRH programs, which have provided funding for down payment assistance for Fallon homebuyers since 2006. Mayor Ken Tedford emphasized the importance of increasing awareness and participation in NRH programs to help more residents achieve homeownership. The council also approved a resolution authorizing the sale of general obligation sewer refunding bonds, which is expected to save the city approximately $150,000 over the term of the refinancing.
