Eighteen athletes from Mountain West schools will compete in the Summer Olympics in Paris, with all but two of the conference’s full-time members being represented. New Mexico leads with five athletes, followed by Colorado State, UNLV, San Diego State, and Nevada with multiple representatives each. Boise State, San Jose State, Fresno State, and Utah State will each have one representative.
Some notable athletes include former Lobos golfers Manon De Roey, Victor Perez, and Gavin Green from New Mexico, and track and field athletes Josh Kerr and Weini Kelati. Colorado State will be represented by basketball player Gian Clavell and track and field athletes Mostafa Hassan and Lauren Gale. UNLV’s representatives include swimmer Panos Bolanos and basketball player Khem Birch.
San Diego State’s Xander Schauffele will defend his Olympic gold medal in golf, while Shanieka Ricketts will compete in the triple jump for Jamaica. Nevada’s Moez Echargui and incoming swimmer Enkhkhuslen “Huska” Batbayar will represent the Wolf Pack. Marisa Howard from Boise State will compete in the steeplechase, and Rae Lekness from San Jose State will play water polo for Canada.
Fresno State’s Stephanie Rovetti will represent Team USA’s rugby team, and Utah State’s Chari Hawkins will compete in the heptathlon. Air Force and Wyoming are the only MW schools without Olympic representation, while affiliate schools like Colorado College and Hawaii will have athletes in the games. Hawaii will send seven representatives, including basketball player Akira Jacobs.
