Two individuals have been arrested in connection with online death threats targeting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mason John Baker, 23, and Garry Belzevick, 67, were charged with uttering threats after allegedly posting threats on social media platforms. The arrests were made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) in the Northwest Region.
Inspector Matthew Johnson emphasized the consequences of online threats, stating that virtual actions and words can have real-life repercussions. The RCMP, responsible for safeguarding designated Canadians and foreign diplomatic personnel, highlighted the evolving security environment faced by public figures, prompting increased vigilance.
The arrests come in the wake of an attempted assassination of former American President Donald Trump, which has put Canadian law enforcement on high alert for political violence. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc confirmed discussions with law enforcement agencies to ensure increased vigilance in light of recent events.
The arrests serve as a reminder of the importance of taking online threats seriously and the need for law enforcement to investigate such criminal activity to hold those responsible accountable. The RCMP remains committed to protecting public figures and upholding the rule of law in the digital age.
