Congressman Steven Horsford, D-Nev., recently spoke at the Nevada State Democratic Party convention regarding federal investments in climate resilience for Indigenous communities in Nevada. These investments include funds to modernize tribal power grids, build water storage for communities reliant on well water, and bring electricity to homes. Nevada tribal communities have access to over $813 million from various federal acts passed during the Biden-Harris administration. Horsford emphasized the importance of investing in Nevada tribes for sustainable development and environmental justice. The investments in clean energy infrastructure for Indigenous communities are historic, with specific initiatives in Nevada including home electrification, drought and climate resilience, tribal power grid modernization, and water storage projects. The goal is to improve climate resilience, energy development, and environmental justice for tribal communities. Mathilda Guerrero, from Native Voters Alliance Nevada, highlighted the significance of the Biden administration’s Clean Energy Plan, which aims to achieve 100% clean energy and net-zero emissions by 2050 while recognizing Indigenous voices and sovereignty. Horsford also mentioned the Justice40 Initiative, which ensures that 40% of federal climate benefits flow to disadvantaged communities, including tribal lands. This initiative aims to address historical injustices and ensure equitable distribution of funding. The investments are not only about climate resilience but also about economic development, job creation, and public health. Overall, these initiatives represent a significant step forward in addressing the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in Nevada.
