Lombardo Calls on Biden to Simplify Process for Starting Housing Projects in Nevada | Nevada News

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo is once again urging President Joe Biden to streamline the process for releasing federal land to address the state’s housing crisis. In a letter sent on Tuesday, Lombardo emphasized the need for more housing development in Nevada and expressed concerns about the bureaucratic barriers that hinder the disposal of federal lands. With over 80 percent of Nevada’s land owned by the federal government, Lombardo stressed the importance of making more land available for development.

Lombardo highlighted an upcoming Bureau of Land Management sale of 20 acres of public land to Clark County at below market value, which is expected to enable the development of nearly 150 affordable homes. While this is a step in the right direction, Lombardo emphasized that it is not a comprehensive solution to the state’s housing crisis. He also called for a revised Resource Management Plan for the state to facilitate the development of more housing.

The letter from Lombardo was supported by local economic development and municipality groups, who echoed his concerns about the availability of developable land in Nevada. The governor’s plea to the president comes amidst a series of affordable housing-related initiatives announced by the Biden administration, including below-market sales of land in Southern Nevada and federal grants for housing restoration and construction.

Despite these efforts, Lombardo expressed skepticism about the president’s proposal to cap rent increases for corporate landlords. He believes that more needs to be done to address the housing crisis in Nevada. Overall, Lombardo’s letter highlights the urgent need for action to streamline the process of releasing federal land and increase housing development in the state.
