$800 Million Allocated to Tribal Communities in Nevada for Climate Crisis Mitigation Projects
U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford recently announced that over $800 million in federal investments will be allocated to tribal communities in Nevada for infrastructure projects and measures to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis. During a virtual roundtable with the Native Voters Alliance of Nevada and the Department of Energy, Horsford credited President Joe Biden for signing three key bills that made this historic investment possible.
The funding is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s “Justice 40” initiative, which aims to direct 40% of spending on clean energy and climate mitigation efforts to disadvantaged communities, including tribal nations. In Nevada, projects such as a water system improvement project for the Walker River Paiute Tribe are already underway, with additional funding set aside for home electrification projects to help cut energy costs for indigenous communities.
The extreme weather conditions in Nevada, including record-breaking temperatures in cities like Reno and Las Vegas, underscore the urgency of these investments. By strengthening infrastructure and modernizing power grids against wildfires, these funds will not only help combat the climate crisis but also create jobs and ensure a sustainable future for the planet.
Horsford emphasized that these investments are crucial for the health and well-being of tribal communities that have historically faced chronic under-investment and inequities. With bipartisan support for some of the bills, the federal government is taking significant steps to address the impacts of climate change and ensure a more sustainable future for all.
