San Diego State University dominated the Mountain West Conference by winning six conference championships in the 2023-24 season, solidifying its stronghold as the top athletic department in the league for the third consecutive year. The Aztecs excelled in women’s soccer, swimming, tennis, golf, and softball. With this achievement, SDSU has now won a total of 48 titles since the MW shifted to its 11-school membership in 2013.
However, other schools also showed strong performances in the 2023-24 season. Boise State, Colorado State, and Utah State each won four championships, while New Mexico clinched three titles. Despite a successful run in men’s basketball that led to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16, SDSU did not secure a championship in this sport.
On the flip side, Nevada experienced a season without any conference titles, marking the fifth time they have been shut out since joining the MW in 2012. The Wolf Pack’s closest opportunities came in men’s basketball and softball, but they fell short of securing a share of the regular-season title. Despite this, Nevada has achieved 10 MW titles overall since 2013.
SDSU’s dominance in the MW has been evident over the past decade, with consistent success across various sports. As the MW continues to evolve, other schools are also making strides, such as Utah State’s impressive leap from 12 titles in the first decade to four titles in the 2023-24 season. The competition among MW schools remains fierce as they strive for excellence in collegiate athletics.
