Former Nevada state Assembly and Las Vegas City Council member Michele Fiore pleaded not guilty on Friday to federal charges accusing her of misusing funds raised for a police officer memorial statue. The funds were allegedly used for political campaign costs and personal expenses, such as her daughter’s wedding. Fiore, who ran unsuccessfully for state treasurer in 2022, stated her desire for a speedy trial and looks forward to addressing the allegations.
Fiore, who now serves as a Justice of the Peace in Pahrump, faced four felony counts of wire fraud and felony conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Each count carries a possible penalty of 20 years in prison. Despite the charges, Fiore was allowed to remain free without bond until her trial, scheduled for September 26.
Fiore, known for her support of gun rights and backing of rancher Cliven Bundy during armed standoffs with federal law enforcement, was appointed to the bench in 2022 after losing her bid for state treasurer. Her attorney, Michael Sanft, confirmed that she had also been served with paperwork from the state Commission on Judicial Discipline, which could suspend her with pay due to the felony charges.
The case has drawn significant attention, given Fiore’s controversial past and political connections. Fiore’s attorney will represent her in both the federal criminal case and any proceedings before the discipline commission. Despite the charges, Fiore remains adamant about her innocence and looks forward to the opportunity to address the allegations in court.
