Advocacy Group Assisting Las Vegas Street Vendors in Meeting Licensing Requirements

Theo Tepetzi has been a street vendor in Las Vegas for over 20 years, but recently had to change her venue due to a new ordinance that limits where vendors can operate. The change has impacted her income, making it difficult for her to provide for her family. Make the Road Nevada is launching a fundraiser to help street vendors like Tepetzi navigate the expensive licensing process required under the new regulations. The ordinance was a response to a state law passed in 2023, directing jurisdictions to create licensing requirements for street vendors. The process involves multiple steps, including obtaining a state business license, health permits, and liability insurance, totaling over $1,000 for first-time applicants. Many vendors, mostly making only a few hundred dollars a week, are struggling to cover these costs. Make the Road Nevada’s campaign aims to support vendors through financial assistance and guidance in the licensing process. Tepetzi appreciates the help and is hopeful that the campaign will help her overcome the barriers to obtaining a license. The organization plans to host workshops, translate materials, and advocate for changes to make the licensing process more accessible for street vendors. Approximately 100 to 150 vendors have shown interest in the program, and Make the Road Nevada is also working with vendors in the Reno area. Through the fundraiser, the organization hopes to support vendors in achieving their dreams and contribute to the local economy and culture.
